Energy challenges in sub-Saharan Africa have been animated by two key questions: What is the role for renewable energy sources versus fossil fuels in addressing the region’s generation shortfall? And what is the role for centralized versus distributed energy systems in addressing energy poverty? This discussion will explore the opportunities and challenges of closing the region's electricity gap using fossil and renewable energy, and how the roles of centralized and distributed energy systems may change over coming decades.
